No liquor license for North University Wal-Mart

There will be no packaged liquor sold at the Wal-Mart on North University in the near future. The Peoria City Council voted 8-2 Tuesday night to deny the company's request for a Class C-1 Liquor License to sale beer and wine. Wal-Mart Attorney Harlan Powell said Wal-Mart officials wanted to have one 28 foot aisle of liquor with no refrigerators.

Second District Councilwoman Barbara Van Auken says she heard major opposition to this move. She says both residential and business neighbors have expressed they don't want package liquor sold in the area.

Councilmen Eric Turner and Clyde Gulley voted against the denial. Turner said the store is in a totally commercial area and has the best security possible to avoid problems.

The council voted 10-0 to deny the request for a Class B liquor license for Elliot's on North University. That would have allowed for liquor to be sold at the adult entertainment club, while still allowing patrons between the ages of 18 and 20. The liquor commission had recommended denial.

City staff was also given the go ahead to approve Converse Marketing to design a new logo for the city. The current Indian head logo has been in place for the last 28 years. The council allotted $30,000 in this year's budget for the re-design.
