Peoria and East Peoria Police ready for the fireworks

This is the second year for Methodist Red, White and Boom with Peoria and East Peoria joining forces along each riverfront to stage the massive fireworks event.

The second year also means some changes in the way each city's police department will handle the crowd heading home at the same time. Lt. Elizabeth Buck is with the Peoria Police Department. She says her hope is people will slowly leave after the show rather than all trying to leave at once like usual.

Still, Peoria police will close Washington Street between Liberty and Hamilton to allow the crowd to disperse to their cars. Buck even has a tip for boaters. She says the boat docks are closed at the Main Street area all day Friday.

East Peoria Deputy Police Chief Pete Fisher says everyone just needs to be patient and keep their sense of humor. He said to leave all parking spaces open rather than using a space to set up lawn chairs and other accessories.

Fisher reminds everyone the fly over ramp over I-74 will be closed to traffic this year during the fireworks. West Camp Street will be one way only after the fireworks heading east toward North Main from Riverside Drive to Altorfer Lane.
