Slaying suspect apprehended in Granite City

(AP) - Authorities say the Illinois State Police have captured an ex-convict suspected of killing eight people in two states. FBI spokeswoman Kelly Brennan says 28-year-old Nicholas T. Sheley was captured Tuesday outside a bar in Granite City, about 10 miles north of St. Louis. She didn't immediately have more information about the arrest. Bartender Kelly Ronk says Sheley came into Bindy's ordered a water and went to the bathroom before another bartender and customer recognized him. They notified police and minutes later authorities including FBI agents arrived at the bar. Sheley -- who was smoking a cigarette -- was arrested outside the bar around 7 p.m. The FBI launched a manhunt for Sheley, who they believe is tied to the killings of eight people in Illinois, including Galesburg, and Missouri. Galesburg police had said they obtained a murder warrant for Sheley on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated battery and vehicular hijacking in the death of Ronald Randall. Randall's body was found behind a Galesburg grocery store, and an autopsy shows the 65-year-old died from blunt force trauma to the head. Police say Randall's 2007 pick-up truck was found in St. Louis, and evidence discovered inside points to Sheley's involvement. Authorities say the eight victims of an alleged killing spree in Illinois and Missouri appear to have died in the same manner.
