Tragedy Strikes Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Tragedy was a late starter in the Derby. The excitement of Big Brown's victory was tempered though
as runner-up Eight Belles had to be euthanized after breaking both front ankles at the finish line.  Doctor Larry Bramlage, the Derby's on-call vet, said the filly's injuries were too severe to even attempt her to move off the track. Trainer Larry Jones said there was no way to save the horse, who was trying to become the third filly to win the Derby. She was scratched out of the fillies-only Kentucky Oaks on Friday for a chance to beat the boys. Jones said Eight Belles ran great in what he called "the
race of her life."
